Australia was such a great place that at the end of WW2, there were circa 18,000 Italian Prisoners Of War throughout Regional Australia.

When it was time to go home, over 2,000 of them shot through and went AWOL so that they wouldn’t be shipped back to Italy.

My Grandfather had 11 Italian POW’s and 2 of them hid when it was time to leave.

He ended up sponsoring 2 of them to stay in Australia when the programme was set up.

The animosity between Northern and Southern Italians at the time was thus that as a gesture of appreciation for having the opportunity to be in Australia as POW’s that both groups would not cook Christmas Dinner together but instead cooked two Christmas Dinners......... one for lunch and one at night.

Go figure...... we are encouraged to be ashamed of a great culture and a great country.
