I kept looking for a reason that explains the change in the flag. This twit may partially say why.

My take: Of course the flag of the south may refer to the old country "South Yemen". However, this is partially so, because there is a star on the flag as seen in the twit above (within the blue triangle) and this is the flag aligned with the STC or Southern Transitional Council.
