The Narrabri Shire ‘Yes 2 Gas from the Pilliga’ movement has drawn strong support according to spokesperson Mrs Louise Tout.
The group formed recently to ‘give a voice’ to what Mrs Tout said was the ‘silent majority’ of people who welcomed the development of a local coal seam gas industry.
“We sought feedback from the community and the results more than confirmed what we already knew”said Mrs Tout.
“The majority in the community is very supportive of the coal seam gas industry in the Pilliga and fed up with misinformation being peddled by some people with greenie left agendas whose  fear mongering has managed to draw some local people to their position.
“We decided it was time to  put the views of the silent majority who support Santos and  really want to see this industry develop in the Pilliga scrub.”
Mrs Tout said a group of Yes 2 Gas supporters had got together for a demonstration of their views, complete with their new ‘Yes to Gas signs.’
“I could have mobilised many more,” she said.
“It only took a few phone calls and the enthusiastic response really confirmed that people are backing the industry and Santos, and are not happy with being labelled as part of  ‘a community against coal seam gas’ which the anti gas activists have taken upon themselves to announce.
“The anti gas lobby doesn’t speak for the community” Mrs Tout said.
“We have seen the pictures in The Courier of the anti gas campaigners with their signs and heard claims that 98 percent of the farming community is opposed to the industry.
“We are going to put up our own ‘Yes 2 Gas’ signs where we are invited” she said.
“We want to repudiate rubbish claims like alleged radioactive water in Pilliga, spills of ‘toxic’ water, which is actually about one third the salinity of seawater, and other bizarre and non factual propaganda.
“The anti gas people talk about a network of pipes, and the pipes criss crossing everywhere in Pilliga.
“What they didn’t say is  that all the gas wells won’t be put in at the same time - they will be progressively spread over 20 to 25 years and the 850 wells will be at 425 sites over those 20 to 25  years out in the middle of the scrub.
“The pipes will be underground no one will see it or know it they are there” said Mrs Tout.
“It’s time someone responded to the claims of the anti gas lobbyists which are creating unnecessary anxiety, particularly in the farming community.
“It’s pretty simple to understand the benefits our shire and the state will get from a local gas industry, in jobs and money flowing into our economy and local businesses,” Mrs Tout said.
“A coal seam gas industry is an unprecedented opportunity for this shire - Narrabri can supply half of NSW’s natural gas requirements from Pilliga.
“In a few years time we will see our agricultural industries, our coal industry and our gas industry all moving forward - that will be great for our community and our future generations and we are lucky to have them all.”
