    Europeans fear change. People in general fear change. What people don't know much about they don't want to risk. If it aint broke don't fix it as they say, and that must be the way the French and Dutch see it ... both are wealthy nations with good social systems.
    The French and Dutch are very patriotic people (Germans and English too) and they see themselves as members of their country before they see themselves as members of Europe. Too much bad history between all of these nations in the past still comes to surface and there is still much distrust between them. They must fear that the EU threatens their sovereignty to a degree ... and why wouldn't they when you look at the countless wars between Europe's segregated peoples.
    As those who lived through the second world war die, and peace in Europe continues then the current generation who haven't faced war in Europe will have some evidence that the old Europe has gone and it is then that they will feel more accepting a united Europe.
