I don't think travellers to India went there for a holiday. In many cases I would think they were going for the funeral of a parent or loved one – one of the few reasons they'd get permission to leave Australia. There are also English teachers, aid workers and many others (one of whom is a friend) who for personal or work reasons felt they had to go and then found themselves stuck. To characterise them as selfish tourists who were throwing caution to the wind and so deserve the treatment they're now getting is pretty nasty.
Australia's quarantine system at Howard Springs (not hotel quarantine) offers very good protection for isolating any arrivals that may bring a new variant with them. I would prefer to see that used, rather than a blanket ban on citizens returning to their own country. I'm not sure that is even legal, but that will be tested soon in the High Court. In the meantime, while I understand that people are very concerned about possibly importing the disaster facing India, I think we have a legal and moral duty of care to our own people.
