I am not a WEB holder but anyone holding has the five State Premiers who insist on nonsensical lockdowns, travel curbs, a ludicrous 'traffic light' system where even Victorians need permission to reenter their own state (Daniel Andrews) as the biggest enemy.
The travel and accommodation subsectors are being destroyed. The only State Premier who's shown a large amount of commonsense is Gladys Berejiklian of NSW. Steven Marshall of South Australia is the next least worst. Mostly, these two have managed to keep their state economies ticking along and have minimised the number of restrictions on our daily lives.
With so many stranded interstate, one would have to be nuts to book an interstate holiday as there's a huge chance even if restrictions were lifted, they might be reimposed at short notice. Unfortunately, WEB (and FLT et al) will continue to suffer from a lack of bookings.
Scomo and his Federal Government are limited in what they can do but incentives for states that refuse to adopt draconian lockdowns and other economy-sapping measures would be a positive step.
I am in two minds about whether sector-specific JobKeeper assistance should continue post the end of March 2021 - it's costly to the national debt - but on balance, probably 'yes'.
However the five recalcitrant State Premiers have to see sense and realise that contrary to what Mark McGowan (WA) claims and Daniel Andrews' (Victoria) behaviour suggests, we cannot 'eradicate' this virus. We have to learn to live with it. Predictions of a doomsday scenario with thousands of hospital ICU beds needed were one mistake of many that epidemiologists or other health sector forecasters made.
