If you wanted to be serious about reducing global whatever they are calling it this week, a combination of nuclear stations (fission used to heat water to steam to drive steam turbine) and combined cycle stations where primary generation is by gas turbine driven generators and the exhaust gas is used to heat water to steam to drive a smaller capacity steam turbine driven generator. Now we are looking at a station efficiency around 55%

So the result is a higher system efficiency and plenty of system "flywheel" to maintain stability in the base load.
