Who is eligible for third dose now and who could be included in the full booster roll-out?

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) announced last week that just half a million Britons with severely suppressed immune systems will get third doses.

The group include people with conditions that weaken their immune systems, such as leukaemia, HIV and those who have had stem cell transplants.

It also include those on medicine that suppresses their immune system, such as after an organ transplant.

The third group includes those receiving treatment for chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease, such as corticosteroids.

Patients who took a high dose of steroids a month before they were vaccinated were also eligible.

The JCVI said there was evidence to suggest a significant number of these people did not mount a strong immune response after their first two injections.

Advisers are now considering the latest data to decide who else should be invited for a booster dose.

It is not yet clear who else will be offered a third Covid vaccine.

The booster programme was initially thought to include 32million over-50s, health and social care staff and those who are vulnerable.

But recent comments from JCVI members suggest the full rollout will be a lot more limited and might only include those who are the most at-risk from the virus.

This could include other immunosuppressed and clinically extremely vulnerable people and possibly those living in care homes

One can only hope it is only for those truly vulnerable !
