Try any of the following experiments at home:
1) Take a plastic drinking straw and place it in a glass of water. Now place the glass of water in the freezer. Leave until the water freezes and remove and observe.
OR
2) Place a plastic drinking straw into a saucepan and fill it with dirt and rocks (almost full) and water(1 cm). Now place on your cooktop.
Steel melts at about 1370 dg celsius. However it doesn't maintain its structural integrity from 20-1369 dg.
When rock is heated it too does not maintain its structural inegrity (Expands/fractures).
It is for this reason that UCG is not viable. There is no material yet available that maintains its structural integrity when the forces resultant of heat and temperature from UCG are applied. Further, because the process is occurring at great depth their is already large forces in play before the disruption caused by the burning/gasification of coal.
