He was openly gay but against gay marriage. He did not kill himself due to any self hate. He killed himself due to the reaction to the protest. From what I have heard he copped a lot of abuse, threats etc. He was treated badly by the press who immediately attacked him and the LNP abandoned him, although that was a while ago. The protest was ill informed, but he was an idealist, who despite being gay had conservative beliefs. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
