Who? Ethan Van Roo Douglas? he is only the UQU President. Sure, as Union Secretary, he presided over the Protests, intimidation and bullying involving the Hong Kong and mainland students like in the 4Corners report, he might have totally trashed the UQU name, and UQ name, domestically and internationally.
However to be fair, Ethan Van Roo Douglas is only a fifth year Arts/ Law student who was just trying to get his first real job?
Beijing may presumably keep a good intelligence watch on future activities in that regard? Australian political operatives and law societies as well should reputation be a determinant factor in things like that?
People do make mistakes, there have been no adverse Court or coronial findings just yet, only Ethan’s statements in the press. Ethan may have made a rather large one but he could mount a defense, through his Attorneys, that he was just starting out, he may blame the culture saying it pre-existed before him, and say ex UQU President Georgia Milroy or someone was responsible for the cultural issues in UQ.
He could also say that the Federal Government is responsible for UQ funding so UQ is Federal Minister for Education Simon Birmingham’s responsibility.
Beijing will certainly have it all under watch as well not to mention the Federal Government because of all the pre-existing villainy, violent protects and intimidation/ bullying allegations.
Not only Brisbane Times reporters and editors, not only the Queensland Premier/ Police Minister and Police Commissioner but also the UQU and UQ have to wait until the Court and Coronial findings have been made before rushing to judgement.
