your two biggest loses ,why and lessons learnt

I have had a lot of wins but also some big loses
the two biggest loses would have to be GPT and TLS

On GPT I lost $27,900 and TLS I lost $29,627 as of today

the reason I lost so much money is that I assumed (wrongly) that these were blue chip stocks were relatively safe investments and you couldn't lose that much on them.
well I did, in each case more than 50%
with TLS, I didn't think the government would dare to smash the company after they sold to me
with GPT, I underestimated the amount of debt that property trusts
Now I have learnt some great lessons from this experience
first up don't invest in highly regulated monopolies.
Secondly, don't trust the governments to support a company that they sell to you.
thirdly, always look at the balance sheet and find out how much debt the company is carrying.
