Why this Millennial investor doesn’t sell shares

Ryan Chan, 25, first dipped his toe in the world of investing with a small purchase of bitcoin in 2017.

But when he started full-time work two years later, it was the share market that really captured his attention. Now, he has a portfolio worth “tens of thousands” across ASX, New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq listed stocks and says he is “obsessed” with turning his holdings into real wealth.

Ryan very much fits the mould of an “investor” rather than a “trader”. In fact, he has not yet sold any of his positions in any of the companies he has invested in.

Ryan Chan is “obsessed” with share market investing.

“My mantra is to simply invest in superior companies that can deliver value in the long-term,”he tells Wealth Generation.

“This allows me to sleep easy through any volatility and to view short-term dips as buying opportunities. Only when a company drifts away from its fundamental story, would I consider selling my position.Thankfully that hasn’t happened yet.”

Ryan has a particular soft spot for “subscription business models”, especially cloud computing and software-as-a-service providers.

He hopes his ability to pick long-term winners will allow him to get on the property ladder soon. In the meantime, he is also slowly upping his exposure to cryptocurrencies and diversified exchange-traded funds.

“The best way to learn is to simply get started and have skin in the game,” he says.
