Zambian copper miners call off strike after First Quantum bows to wage demands

More than 400 unionized miners at a Zambian copper mine owned by Canada's First Quantum Minerals Ltd. have called off a strike after managers agreed to honour a wage deal, a union official said yesterday. The strike at the Kansanshi mine began on Wednesday after angry members of the Mine Workers Union of Zambia (Muz) walked off the job, claiming that management had gone back on a recent labour deal to raise wages by 21%. "The strike is now over on the understanding that management will correct the anomaly they created on Monday," Rayford Mbulu, the union president, told Reuters. A jump in metal prices have encouraged Zambia's miners to demand larger pay hikes, say industry analysts.
