Technically you are right of course, but I am a big fan of Einstein's view of relativities.
An older (as in not long for the knackery) coal fired power station may only recover 25% to 30% of the calorific content of coal in the combustion process.
A syngas (and for all intents and purposes conventional or coal seam gas) fired modern combined cycle power station can purportedly recover 55% to 60% of the calorific content of the coal.
So pretty much a modern syngas fired power station burns about half the amount of coal for the same energy output aging coal fired power station and therefore produces less CO2.
