The History of Apartheid in South Africa

    from the above article:

"The penalties imposed on political protest, even non-violent protest, were severe. During the states of emergency which continued intermittently until 1989, anyone could be detained without a hearing by a low-level police official for up to six months. Thousands of individuals died in custody, frequently after gruesome acts of torture. Those who were tried were sentenced to death, banished, or imprisoned for life, like Nelson Mandela.

The apartheid policy was highly effective of achieving its goal of preferential treatment for whites, as is demonstrated by the statistics in Figure 1."

Absolutely, it was an evil political, economic and sociological system that caused untold suffering, deprivation and human misery. The human scars of that horrific period will remain deeply ingrained in the psyche of South Africans for generations to come.

Which is why so many fair-minded, decent and morally upright people fought to bring about change and equality in South Africa - both within the country itself and beyond its borders.

Racial prejudice and xenophobic bigotry are such destructive human traits that there should be absolutely zero tolerance for them in right-minded civil society.

And your attitude of "The evidence of racial prejudice and xenophobic bigotry that is evident in South Africa today is irrelevant, because look how bad about Apartheid was", is not one of zero tolerance.

Rather - given the seriousness of racial issues - by not being universally and unequivocally critical of racism in all forms and under all circumstances is tantamount to endorsing it.

Because if the fight is not against ALL racism, ALL the time and EVERYWHERE, then it is not a genuine fight.

You can't just be anti-racist when it suites you or is convenient for you to do so.

Being selectively anti-racist, as you appear to be, achieves little other than to facilitate different groups of people going through cycles of treating one another badly.

And in the meantime, all it does is lower your credibility in being able to counter some of the overtly racist comments on a forum such as this.

You need to be truly above reproach if you want to assume the moral high ground, I'm afriad.
