Zinc-Air battery

Zinc-air batteries have recently drawn tremendous attention because of their high potential in various applications. These batteries use raw materials that are relatively cheap, low in toxicity, and environmentally friendly. In addition, these batteries possess high specific energy density and are considered relatively safe and stable.
Associate Professor Soorathep Kheawhom and his team from Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, have successfully assembled thin film flexible zinc-air batteries that were fabricated by a printing technique – a very promising technique for the fabrication of future electronic devices. The technique is simple with high throughput and environmental affability.

The zinc-air battery received a gold medal and the best invention in green technology award from the 27th International Invention and Innovation Exhibition (ITEX’16), 12–14 May 2016, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. High energy density of the battery was attributed to a very thin and highly porous cathode GDL fabricated by screen-printing. This cathode enhanced oxygen permeability, resulting in a better and more efficient three-phase reaction zone. After that, rechargeable zinc-air batteries were developed by his team.
The invention received a gold medal and the special prize from Eurobusiness-Haller and Haller Pro Inventio Foundation at 2016 Kaohsiung International Invention and Design EXPO (KIDE 2016), 9–11 December 2016, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
