Historically, 10 of the last 11 U.S. recessions began under Republican presidents, with every Republican president since Benjamin Harrison (1889–1893) experiencing a recession during their first term. Between 1949 and 2013, 42 out of 50 quarters classified as recessions occurred under Republican administrations, accounting for 84% of recession quarters during that period. Over the past 50 years, Republican presidents oversaw 68 months of recessions compared to 13 months under Democrats
