Unfortunately there are many wanna-be-tech-executives floating around that think exactly this way, because they actually have no experience building and running pure tech-driven businesses over the long term. They are dead wrong - software "rots", and as others have said, it must be maintained. A tech company needs to always be working on their "next-generation" platform - The tech is constantly evolving, and if you don't keep up you will lose on the business side sooner or later as your platform becomes more and more expensive to maintain, and/or scale.... And key components in your tech stack become unsupported by vendors etc etc.
