I think you'll find that the zip app on Google Play is in the finance category and afterpay is in shopping category. So the rankings by comparison are not relevant.
Appannie or applyzer will give actual ranking data daily.
They are both ranked in the shopping category in the app store.

Zip floating between #3 & #5
Afterpay's growth in overall charts has been relatively flat in comparison to zip this year, zip although at a lower rank has shown much greater growth. However, when dealing in the top ranks,
50% of all app revenues are generated by the top 25% of apps
(not applicable to zip as their revenue is not through the app store but the same principle applies) so afterpay's small steps up the charts could be much larger download numbers than they appear.
