I only started making a lot of money once I realised that the popular investing methods are made popular by the professional firms to ensure you make them money - dividend investing, value investing, following broker reports etc. They'll make you follow the wrong metrics and sell when you should buy and vice versa.
It's the same way that governments will happily let you protest but only in ways they are confident won't work or will only work very very slowly.
