Zip’s reliance on cheap funding, speculative trading, and a customer base of financially vulnerable consumers paints a dire picture for its future in a high-interest, high-inflation environment. With US borrowing costs rising and the economic landscape shifting, Zip’s lack of return on capital or equity makes it a purely speculative play with no sustainable foundation. Unlike Afterpay, which found a lifeline through diversification, Zip remains a single-product business squeezed between mounting funding costs and a shrinking market. The growth story is over, and without profitability or innovation, Zip risks becoming irrelevant in a rapidly tightening market.
