Don't know where you got your information about the smallpox being introduced by early Australian settlers.
It was my understanding that is came from The Macassans, yes Asia from trading with the local Indigenous people. Groote was hit pretty hard by it and they had no contract with white man.
Might be wrong but that's my understanding.
