Officials are hoping to draw more than 5,000 people onto Melbourne's streets to dance to Zorba the Greek this afternoon.

The bid to break the world record for the most people dancing to the tune will be made in Federation Square.

Victoria's Minister Assisting the Premier on Multicultural Affairs, John Pandazopoulos, is hoping thousands will turn up for the event, which will raise funds to send Australian athletes to the Olympics.

He says those taking part will be given instruction on how to dance the Zorba.

"Anything over 5,000 and the Australian Olympic Committee will make it into the Guinness Book of Records," he said.

"It will not only show that Melbourne has the biggest Greek community outside of Greece ... [but] of course many Australians are going to join the Greek community in beating this world record to support their Olympians on their way to Athens."
