Tell them they if they wish to pursue this they will have to pay the damages caused by their error, by way of offset. The cost of restating your super accounts for the last 5 years would exceed the $1,000 and they would end up not getting the $1,000 and having to pay.
If they don't see the logic of this then just ignore them if and until you get a letter of demand. Their legal costs in pursuing this would exceed $1,000.
