"the reason we were told as a maintaince problem /safety problem with your aircraft"
This is different though. They shouldn't need to and cant always give 1days notice. The 1day is for economic/commercial reason. Eg dont fly a half empty plane. Cancel instead and try find alternatives for the passengers invovled. For that you get notice.

The original post made it sound like it was operation reasons due to extra Bali flights but subsequent posts indicate that was only a guess. The reason is important imo. If mechanical then tough luck. Better to be alive and late. But if its operational then their is reason to be annoyed. But most travel insurance compensates for 6hr delays or cancellations. Insurance is for compensation. Airlines are just their to get you from A to B. Ofcourse we expect it to be timely but we also look at track record and price when considering tickets.

Since OP can get refund and has stated lives in Japan with no out of pocket expense, their really isn't much an airline could do compensation wise. They normal find a hotel and do meal vouchers if needed but it wasnt needed. I remember Malaysia airlines buying pizza and drinks for us when it was about 3hr late departing. Luckily I factor in about that much time for most connections and made the next flight.

The best you can hope for is small voucher for next travel. That way they get another fare and more profit out of you. And you smile from a $20 slap in face.
