If a poll were prepared, with balanced choices, I wonder what a majority of Australians would seek from the nation's political leaders?
Here's a few policy framing options that come to mind:
1. popular, for satisfaction short term
2. structural, for a sustainable longer term
3. selfish, to ensure re-election by any means
4. visionary, for potentially nation defining outcomes
5. disciplined, for a balanced range of outcomes
I swear if Australians were held to account, to define the leadership mandate they wanted for the country, a majority would NOT nominate 1. or 3.
When Australians are not held to account, imo a majority drift to 1. and tolerate 3. from their leaders as a consequence.
I reckon this is the discussion the country needs to have to progress from the ground hog day of Australian politics of compromised outcomes of the past decade or so.
