$15/ ton is 1.5c per kg. I think you're underestimating the weight of trees a little.
Selective logging can work very well. When a tree falls in a storm or is burnt from a lightning strike do you think the forest around it is destroyed? Go for a drive through a forest after a big storm and you may be surprised to see how many trees are downed naturally in one event.
