Surely there is a substantial difference - namely the irrefutable evidence linking cancer and smoking while no such weight of evidence exits with vaccination - GOVT 's like nothing more than to go after the bad guys especially Big Pharma because there are votes in it.
The TGA in Australia still dines out on the fact that they did not approve Thalidomide and so largely avoided the massive issues with the drug seen in other countries in the 60's.

And finally your contention, that the growing incidence of Autism is directly link to increased childhood vaccination, is incorrect - it is pure due to the dramatic expansion of the symptoms of Autism to include "Autism spectrum" - its no longer a disease of essentially non communicative children fascinated with spinning objects. There are a huge number of people today diagnosed with AUTISM Spectrum who in the past would have simply been thought as just a little odd.

What the anti-vaxxers are trying to suggest is that unless Vaccines are 100% effective with no side effects then they should be banned.
Sadly this is an absurd standard that would effectively mean ALL medical treatments should be banned because none are either 100% safe or 100% effective.
