Meerkat, using a VPN still leaves all your internet traffic open to the G'uvment snooping as all the address details are still "in clear". and readable in the packet headers. Using tor/onion routing as I suggested above, the packets leave your computer encrypted and all they can track is your traffic to the first proxy server. As it bounces around a number of transit/proxy points it becomes very difficult to track where it comes out. It is only decrypted at the exit point where your request goes out to the normal internet. Result is they can't see where you are really connecting to or what you are requesting.
