Australia became an independent nation on 1 January 1901. The British Parliament passed legislation allowing the six Australian colonies to govern in their own right as part of the Commonwealth of Australia.
ANZAC landed on the 25 April 1915 but I could be wrong about that.
Justifying that battle by calling it the birth of our nation is not justified in my opinion.
Australia was already a nation and had its own characteristics without the ANZAC landing.
Gallipoli is to be commemorated to remember the lives that were lost and the families that lost their children, fathers, brothers, sisters and so on. It is now and rightly so used to remember all wars that were fought on foreign soil which is all our wars.
