I am not sure the explanation provided by management at the AGM holds water for the simple fact that they already struck a deal with Aspen Pharmacare to market the product in ANZ. I happen to live in the USA and have some familiarity with how pharma companies set drug prices around the world. I doubt setting the price for the US first will have any bearing on how the product is priced around the world. Every market is different. Even in the EU, each country is its own market. What makes the US such an attractive market for pharma companies, unlike in most other countries, is the lack of price control on ethical drugs. Had they begun commercializing the product a year or so ago, they would have exposed the drug to potential research studies about its efficacy. Favorable medical research papers on the drug would in turn raise awareness and positively influence the opinions of the medical profession.
One has to realize that this drug will have to compete with existing drugs that the medical profession has been accustomed to prescribing. It takes sometimes 3-4 years for a novel drug to really gain traction... for a variety of reasons: health insurance companies/governmental health organizations may be hesitant to cover it... the medical profession may be reticent to prescribe it... the roll out of the drug may botched up.... other pharmaceutical companies my lobby against the drug (behind the scenes)...there may be side effects to the drug that were not identified during the trials.... This is why they could have benefited from earlier commercialization of the drug. Only time will tell if they made the right call. That said, I don't think their current approach is sustainable over long run.
