There are cases where Vanadium can beat Lithium, primarily in battery life. My understanding is that Lithium batteries work by a change in crystal structure, which loses some of its charging ability (They're actually really good... I have a rental business that is currently switching over from 240V power to 2 x 18V lithium batteries for all the hand held power tool applications). However Vanadium works by a offering and gaining electrons (it's a valency thing) which is reliable and repeatable. The big potential is the link of renewable energy with Vanadium Redox batteries. We're lucky in NZ that we have some massive hydroelectric power stations but you poor buggars in Oz need to rely on coal, yet you have an abundance of solar power possabilities. Storing solar generated electricity during the day and discharging during the night could solve a massive number of issues. I think there was really good research carried out by UNSW or Syd Uni on vanadium redox batteries?
