Your are right, Cat Stevens' comeback fell short of his earlier acclaim.
Amongst all the singer guitarists of the 70s, he seemed more than most to express the turbulence of the times yet in a mellow way.
Harry Chapin, another singer guitar player of the 70s, was a little angrier and more ascerbic. Neil Young attacked you with political wrath.
But Cat Stevens seemed to plead his case politely and intelligently rather than criticise.
I saw a doco on him on SBS and he has devoted his later life to helping kids. He established a school in the UK to assist in assimilating muslim kids into mainstream UK life.
Still, with all those good intentions, you can't help thinking that his music, had he continued, would have reached more people and achieved more good.
Just stray thoughts from an old boomer.
