Canada has an extremely long history of successful gold mining, but this article demonstrates that community attitudes can vary a lot, like in any big and diverse country I guess.

The Halifax Examiner is clearly extremely anti-mining and not afraid of being vocal about it, although you have to wonder if other voices aren't simply being drowned out. It's probably another palm hits the forehead moment from St Barb's, but I'm a firm believer in responsible mine management and operations being able to co-exist alongside other industries and interests.

Just look at Hishikari mine in Japan, one of the highest grade gold mines in the World. There are practically rice paddies growing at the portal entrance.
