Remember that this carbon is of course not captured and forever removed from the atmosphere reducing the CO2 in the air by securely storing it away long term by eg embedding it into concrete or into another holding matrix. Instead it is re-used (recycled) and re-released. So only neutral - and assuming that the energy required for the process is carbon neutral also. Of course, it still has a positive impact as it substitutes fossil fuels otherwise used.
Don't get me wrong. It is a very important and super interesting carbon capture and conversion technology, one that we will always need because we will never entirely get away from the need to burn stuff to create energy. Hence, there is an urgent need and a massive market for carbon neutral combustion media. I just wanted to clarify that.
Most interesting of course is that James still believes this can be done for $20/t. In fact, I wish he'd say $40/t. Still extremely favourable when you compare that to current carbon abatement trading prices of over $200/t. Imagine how the market would react if it then turns out we can do it for $25/t (when the expectation was $40)!
