Dude, do you think they ring up Vanguard, hey I want to another 50K to sell now, then ring back 5 minutes later. They borrow in blocks.
They then use these share blocks to sell as they see fit.
If I wanted to short, I'd do it direct through a broker that allows, or, I'd borrow 50M ADN. These 50M ADN get transferred to me. They are long.
Now if I short 10M, I'd still have 40M left. Tomorrow I may drip 15t shares every 5 minutes into the Bid, and have 39.9M left after tomorrow
