So looking forward to the Webinar address by Benchmark on 27th February.
In a previous address the Benchmark presenter claimed that in a Lithium Ion battery there was 5 to 10 times more Fluorspar required than Lithium.
This seemed at odds with other material published by Benchmark.
Part of the explanation is that the presenter was comparing Lithium (the element - atomic number 3) to Fluorspar (the mineral - CaF2 - molecular weight 38). The graph shows Fluorine content by weight. Fluorine (the element - atomic number 9) is only 18/38 ths (47%) of Fluorspar. And of course acid grade Fluorspar is 97% pure.
Lithium is super light (atomic number 3). Fluorine is three times heavier (atomic number 9). The graph indicates tonnage % - so the different densities should not impact.
I will be interested to hear if there is more to this than I understand.
As a side issue CaF2 appears to be referred to a Fluorite when it is sought as a mineral. It appears to be called Fluorspar when it is mined for industrial purposes. It is one and the same thing.
