Its common practice when other targets are believed to be a short distance ( under say 100 metres) from the mother hole. Its fast, and a heck of a lot cheaper than drilling another hole from surface. Several wedge holes can be run off the mother hole, in different directions, if necessary. Its not rocket science, I think I recall wedge-holes being done at Nova, for example, when required.
