The Dow Jones Industrial average consists of 30 companies listed on the NASDAQ and NYSE. The performance of the NASDAQ is heavily reliant of the performance of tech stocks. The DJI is a better overall view in my opinion.
It's no different to the ASX50 which is the top 50 companies on the ASX. It's just a grouping of the best performing companies and is rebalanced based on performance.
