I watched Business show on TV and listening to our boss and he was laying the blame on BOM's f'ed up forecasts that drove farmers to do things they would otherwise have never done.

Farmers re-acting to long range weather forecasts is real. Although usually the forecasters get it right - in this case they didn't.
One of the first companies I bought shares in was Patties Foods, the manufacturers of Four and Twenty pies which was listed on disallowed prior to being bought out by a Private Company.
Following their reporting and listening to management report enabled me to realize that beef was cheaper and, therefore, Patties achieved a higher margin, when dry conditions were forecast as cattle would be sold prematurely rather than farmers retaining them since they would then have to pay for feed that might have otherwise been provided naturally through green grass. That extra selling pressure dropped the price of beef and lifted Patties profits.
