Comparing Aussie BNPL companies to a Malaysian one is apples and oranges. Australia is around the top 15% in the world for credit card use, the aussie culture of getting into debt is ingrained. Houses, cars, boats, holidays... Chuck it all on the card! BNPL is just another way to get a line of credit for money to spend.
In Malaysia IOU is a legitimate option amongst many in an environment that is openly pushing for a complete digital conversion. Not even taking into account, the unbanked or the rules around sharia law or the fact that IOU has acquired access (through IDSB) to high quality consumers which would directly reduce the risk of bad debt as mentioned in the article. It could not be any less relevant.
