Apple has products that use memory chips, and its future products likely to have a requirement for storage class memory chips (4ds' focus)

Apple's A$1.4b deal to acquire the IP/technology relating to Intel's 5G chip (which is still in development and unlikely to be in a product until 2021) confirms their strategy of wanting to own the components and not being beholden to suppliers. Relevantly, another supplier to Apple is Western Digital.

Following same logic, Apple would prefer to buy 4DS (even if its tech is still in development) rather than be beholden to Western Digital. Could set up a nice bit of competitive tension between the two.
