The more "interest" the better when it comes time for the "auction". The more serious parties that are involved the more it increases the chances of getting bid up.

WD has right of refusal so they can always match an offer but without a competitive bidding process WD won't be compelled to throw money at us just because they like us. Technically, they only need to present an offer equal to that of the nearest alternative bid so the strength of the alternatives has a direct impact on shareholder returns even if WD does end up acquiring.

I understand that officially mum's the word in this regards, but I'd be interested to hear whether our tech might be of international interest and then whether the FIRB might have a say in who we can sell to.

Note that WD does not have a right of first refusal or any matching right

It has an option for a non-exclusive licence

It therefore comes down to:

WD wanting it exclusively (i.e. buy 4ds), or
another acquirer wanting it - knowing that WD would still be able to use the technology, but that they would not be beholden to WD

Apple (and other users of memory) would be concerned about 1.
