QF didn't know best when they destroyed their A330s because they were clocking up too many aircraft cycles due to misallocation to domestic operations when they should have been flying international routes.
ETOPS will be pulled back to 180 for 787s by the FAA if significant teething problems emerge. Are you happy to take the risk?
Fuel consumption is in the same ballpark comparing two 787s to a single A380. No much difference.
It is the capital cost of asset purchase, maintenance requirements, slots, additional flight crew needs, and possible ETOPS changes if issues arise.
Essentially it is a risky play and it isn't cheaper. End of story.
