The size of the market for a safe and effective treatment for arthritis is actually significantly higher than PAR's conservative estimates, which are, quite properly, based on "doctor diagnosed arthritis".

However, recent adjusted data for the United States for example, suggests that arthritis, in one form or another (there are actually over 100 different 'types' of arthritis), affects up to 91 million Americans, rather than the 54 million or so who have had a medical diagnosis. This is probably because, in the US, many financially constrained people will not go to their doctors until they're experiencing severe pain or disability.

To look at this another way, US Government forecasts are that by 2040, (when the estimated population of the US will be around 390 million) about 26% of American adults will have doctor diagnosed arthritis, which is to say that there will be around 100 million sufferers. However the true number is likely to be much higher at around 44% of the adult population (say 170 million).
