Dichotomy? Good one. I think it fair to assume he can do both, and you do actually provide some good points.
Also thanks for bringing up the Feb 22 up again, it won't be the last I'm sure. ADN would have gone up quicker if this happened but we know there are good and bad reasons for this not happening. Either way, and you can ask Williams, but if you would have been paying of the mortgage last couple years you probably would have done better than an ADN investment. History is history however.
Right now interest rates are up, and this suits your thesis about stagnant housing market, but I'm sure you realise that the mortgage is just an example - I also mentioned share diversification.
So to talk about your question
"Would you pay off your mortgage with after tax dollars in a market where house prices are leveling at best, or, would you throw it at a company that supposedly had the best stuff in the world and was about to go mining last year? ."
If you are going to ask a question, make it a face value question with unbiased true choices. I'll rephrase it for you.
"Would you pay off your mortgage withafter tax dollarsin a market where house prices are leveling at best, or, would you throw it at a company that supposedly had the best stuff in the worldand was about to go mining last year?."
1) After tax dollars apply to both, it can be ignored, you make it sound like it only applies to the mortgage, and 2) Trashing, to throw more light on the mortgage choice
If I had 24M shares I would not buy more. I'd diversify into other good stocks, or mortgage. I would make sure my family is set with a future, with or without ADN. Then I'd bust my ass to make sure ADN does well, and I'd be a well off man,
I don't have 24M shares, but I do have a sizable holding. With my surplus income, I'd be more inclined to buy some LIthium, Copper, Select BIOs, Essentials type stocks. If I had a mortgage I probalby wouldn't pay it off, I'd invest instead.
I think it all depends on the risk appetite. Now if I bought heaps of other stuff and my ADN weighting was pulled into line, I would add to my 24M.
My portfolio is ADN overweight and I'm very OK with that.
