With the rise of EVs and the development of hydrogen fuel cell for cars the future is looking more bleak for internal combustion engines anyway. We have a window of around 20 years before IGE tech becomes redundant due to falling demand for fossil fuel engines.
If they don't get a wriggle on that window will make the investment a stranded asset.
