This retrospective analysis was undertaken to assess the effectiveness as well as safety of nab-paclitaxel (albumin-bound paclitaxel) and gemcitabine in patients with metastatic soft tissue sarcoma (STS) who were treated with nab-paclitaxel/ gemcitabine chemotherapy only after failure of doxorubicin-based chemotherapy, given that there is a continuously growing evidence that nab-paclitaxel affords a safe and efficacious therapeutic choice for many types of malignant tumors. Of 17 patients included, complete response and partial response was achieved by 1 patient with angiosarcoma and 6 patients, respectively. Stable disease was reported in 5 patients, and progressive disease in 5 patients. Compared with baseline, the average diameter change in target lesion was − 19.06 ± 45.74%. Median progression free survival of 6 months was documented. There were no treatment-related deaths. Overall, experts concluded that a comparatively effective therapeutic choice for STS is nab-paclitaxel/ gemcitabine combination chemotherapy. This combination therapy had a low toxicity and its further exploration is supported
