To short it you need to borrow the shares first from a holder, so typically this option is only available to institutions, and even then only if they can borrow the shares from another institution who owns shares in the company they wish to short. Incidentally, on the thread I have seen numerous mentions of ADN shares passing from weak hands (retail investors) to stronger hands (institutional buying) however I just had a bit of a look at ADN's last 6 months ASX announcements and I can't see evidence of any major institutions becoming substantial holders. Maybe I missed it (I only has a quick look). Or maybe it's simply that most of the recent buying is being driven by retail investors.
